Do INSEAD’s Job Essays Matter? The INSEAD application includes “job essays” that are intended to be short answer questions that all applicants complete as a part of the application process. The three first job essays are:
1. Briefly summarise your current (or most recent) job, including the nature of work, major responsibilities, and where relevant, employees under your supervision, size of budget, clients/products and results achieved.
2. What would be your next step in terms of position if you were to remain in the same company?
3. Please give a full description of your career since graduating from university. Describe your career path with the rationale behind your choices.
To many candidates, these questions seem dry and factually based. Are these essays very important, they ask, relative to the “motivational” essays that are a part of the INSEAD application?
Our response: the job essays are a very important part of the INSEAD application! You should present excellent strategic content through your answers. There are many reasons why these essays are important, including:
Impressions: Breadth and Depth of Experience and Your Value as a StudentThe jobs essays help to convey to the admission committee whether you have an attractive depth and breadth of work experience. You will want to showcase your skills, teamwork, business and leadership experiences, so that it is clear you have a lot to share in the classroom.
Sensible Career TrajectoryThe job essays help you to explain your career trajectory and show that each major job you have held has helped you gain valuable experiences and skills that both make you ready for business school and help equip you for success after business school. For candidates who have had a “disjointed” career trajectory – taking time out of the workplace, changing jobs frequently, changing industries, etc. – you will want to take extra care in how you present those aspects through these essays so that your career trajectory is an asset not a liability for you in the admissions process.
Tools for Distinguishing Yourself from the PackFor candidates from over-represented industries such as private equity or engineering, the job essays become a key way for you to distinguish yourself by highlighting unique experiences and using terminology that helps demonstrate to the admissions committee why you would be a great choice among your industry colleagues to take a seat at their MBA table. For engineers, for example, if one candidate writes in very business-relevant terms and the other candidate sounds more like a mere techie, the former candidate will likely have a great edge in admissions. The job essays can help position you for admissions success.
