do intelligent people also need to study for the GMAT?

I keep hearing stories about people who went to take the GMAT and scored in the 700+ range in their first try, with no effort whatsoever.
I could not do that. Perhaps I could do it after intense preparation. But I see that as a bad omen. I feel like I am trying to defeat the purpose of the exam.
That being said, do intelligent people, like the typical Ivy League graduate, also work their butt off, studying on their own and paying for classes, or is it just us, the dummies, that have to study hard?
