Consider this:
These medicines do nothing.
vs
These medicines are doing nothing.
Which would be correct? Both? Can someone give some more examples to clear such types.

In my point of view both will be correct.
First represent habbit.It also represent the comments about whole generation as meaning.
First sentense says ' These medicines do nothing' mean that these are almost always ineffective.
While 2nd sentence says that ' These medicines are doing nothing' mean that this time these medicine are ineffective. May be author wana say that this time medicines is not working but those medicines worked before.
Example : I write English.( I usually write english but I knew other lang also.)
I am writing English.( While it mean during replying to this question I am writing english.)
