if you can afford it, feel that you are competitive (they are consultants, not magicians) for the schools on your wish list, but have some glaring issues that you need help in addressing, then go for it. I haven't taken my GMAT yet but once I do that and pick the schools I want to apply to I might consider a consultant.

I think they do help marginally but I think they are worth it if money doesn't matter to you. Otherwise I would probably hold back and pay only if you are on the margins of getting accepted. I feel that if you know people who have the time to read your essays it would help just as much especially if they have experience with MBA's.

I had a one hour session with one so I can add a little bit of commentary.

They told me what I already knew basically. I was asking for advice on the schools to apply to and what my weaknesses were. I wonder if I should have listened because it made me feel I needed more to get into my first 2 choices. In the end, I ended up pushing back my applications to next year. There is no doubt in my mind that my application will be much much stronger, but it's ANOTHER YEAR. Ugh.

Well, we'll wait one more year and see.

I suggest you get some of their books. Alex Chu and Paul Bodine look like they have good ones. I'm going to read through them this year. This will help you see what they can do to essays.

Like the previous post, they just help you present a very good, polished, application, but, ultimately, it's still your application.
