I got this note back a few days after email. What can I read into this?
"We were all glad to have you, 'my name'. It was my my pleasure getting the chance to meet you. Good luck in finding the "perfect fit" (hopefully it's at School x), and I hope the admissions process isn't too grueling."
Nothing! I know it is sometimes hard to see from the other side of the process (or imagine), but everyone working or attending knows that the process is not easy and takes a lot out of a candidate. It is tricky (from this side) as to whether you should express this or not. I do all the time, but many other people choose not to.
Also, if you are getting frustrated by not getting emails back from adcoms (where you know there are hundreds of people in the process, if not thousands), try waiting till you go to a recruiting event with 20 other people and don't get a response. You have to learn just to brush it off.
Personally in the role I perform I receive a good number of thank you emails, and 95% of the time I cannot see any way I can add anything by responding other than simply confirming I have read the email. It has to end at some point, otherwise you end up in the classic German escalation of thanking people (there are about ten different ways of various expression, in hierarchy, to say "thank you" and "It was a pleasure" in German - it is insane).
