If we look at the sentence then logically doctors cannot be abused it is only the medicine that can be abused. Hence I have this doubt. there is a sentence in @e-gmat course " in the accident, the car hit the tree, but its engine was not damaged" this sentence is correct because its can only refer to car and not tree.

Similar logic can be applide here and only painkillers can be abused here and not doctors. I am not saying that C is incorrect but had C not been there is option A correct. This is more from the point of geeting my concept clear rather than the correct answer.
Hi Shawnik,

In the sentence - The car hit the tree, but its engine was not damaged, the subject is car. Hence 'its' can logically refer to the car and not the tree.

In the original sentence, the subject is doctors and hence their can refer to doctors even though it is absurd to say so.

Can any1 explain the difference eween their usage and the usage here?

MANHATTAN REVIEW OFFICIAL EXPLANATION:

The pronouns ‘their’ and ‘them’ in A, B and E are ambiguous. In choice D there is a grammatical mistake: The verb does not refer to ‘drugs’, it refers to ‘abuse’ and therefore should be singular. Choice C is the correct answer.
