C. refrain from any physical activity because the more rest the human body gets, it has more time

E. refrain from any physical activity because the more rest the human body receives, the more time it has

This is a SC Butler Question

OFFICIAL EXPLANATION

Doctors recommend that an injured person refrains from any physical activity because the more rest the human body gets, the more time it has to heal itself.

A. refrains from any physical activity because the more rest the human body gets, the more time it has

This answer choice is grammatically incorrect. Recommend is one of the nine verbs to which the Subjunctive rule applies (if it is followed by that). This means that the next verb after recommend that should be in base form. However, refrains is not in base form.

What helps us identify this question as a Subjunctive question as well as identify the mistake is the following Stop Sign:

    propose/recommend/require/request/insist/suggest/mandate/ask/demand that

Whenever you come across this Stop Sign, make sure that the following verb is in its base form.

B. will refrain from any physical activity because the more rest the human body receives, the more time it has

This answer choice is grammatically incorrect and repeats the original Subjunctive error. Recommend is one of the nine verbs to which the Subjunctive rule applies (if it is followed by that). This means that the next verb after recommend that should be in base form. However, will refrain is not in base form.

What helps us identify this question as a Subjunctive question as well as identify the mistake is the following Stop Sign:

    propose/recommend/require/request/insist/suggest/mandate/ask/demand that

Whenever you come across this Stop Sign, make sure that the following verb is in its base form.

C. refrain from any physical activity because the more rest the human body gets, it has more time

Although this answer choice corrects the original Subjunctive error by replacing refrains with the base form of the verb, it is grammatically incorrect. This question uses a Double Comparative. The second part of a Double Comparative must begin with the word the. In this answer choice, however, it begins with the word it.

D. refrain from any physical activity because the more rest the human body gets, there is more time

Although this answer choice corrects the original Subjunctive error by replacing refrains with the base form of the verb, it is grammatically incorrect. This question uses a Double Comparative. The second part of a Double Comparative must begin with the word the. In this answer choice, however, it begins with the word there.

E. refrain from any physical activity because the more rest the human body receives, the more time it has

Recommend is one of the nine verbs to which the Subjunctive rule applies (if it is followed by that). This means that the next verb after recommend that should be in base form. This answer choice, therefore, correctly uses refrain.
