I'm a ORM, native English speaker. I got a 330 on my GRE (162V,168Q, 4.5 AWA). The 4.5 AWA seems to be low, as it's only 79th percentile. My first score, 321 was much lower, but had a higher AWA of 5.
I've always heard the AWA for the GMAT doesn't matter, but does the same hold true for the GRE? Does the AWA impact rankings at all? Aiming for the M7. Should I address this in an optional essay?
reaper1 hope this finds you well
While the AWA is not the most heavily weighted part of the GRE or GMAT, the AWA score can still be an essential factor in the admissions process. However, mostly schools emphasize the Verbal and Quantitative sections and give less weight to the AWA score.
You may address the fact in your essay that you are not too satisfied with your AWA performance, but not discounting the significant improvement you have made over your previous GRE attempt. If anything, this would demonstrate to the school your desire to do better, even though different schools may have different views on the importance of the AWA score.
Make strong arguments in your M7 essays so that the schools are satisfied your AWA performance was more of an anomaly than anything else.
Best wishes
