I want to write that I plan to work at an asset management firm and gain experience in both the buy side and the sell side. Does this even make sense???

Could you rephrase your post.

Are you talking about your professional goals, or something to do in the future?

I believe you are talking wrt the goals essay.

Would work but needs a lot of beef-up. Especially why both.. why not only buy or sell. Any what makes u qualified for buy or sell in asset mgmt

Yes it makes, I started on the sell side and then moved to the buy side, however, the move (on any direction) is not very common. I have a good friend who attended MIT who made the opposite direction before going to Business School. Also know a guy that started with credit structured products and has moved to trading.

I think your original comment makes sense.

I've worked in finance for a few years, and have seen people move betwen the buy and sell side; but I also agree that it's not a very common thing to do.

For what its worth, you may want to consider the message that it sends to the school you're applying to (i.e. it may indicate that you're not entirely clear about what you want to focus on). You may disagree with that comment; you may want to tell schools that you're keeping your experience broad (ie. on both buy and sell sides). Just my 2 cents. Feel free to ignore.
