I took the GMAT today and ended up with 580(Q44 V27)..little disappointed.. I was expecting atleast 650...
I think I skewed because of mismanagement of time...for some reason in the real exam i could not manage time... and ended short on both Quant and Verbal. If I had completed both sections I guess I would have scored more.

I might re-take the exam..maybe in april... is a long gap advisable?..

The schools that I am aiming for -Emory and Georgia State ..will still take 580, but I am thinking of increasing my chances by getting a better score...

I'd retake if you're targeting Goizueta, which is clearly the better school of the two.

I don't know that Emory is necessarily the better of the two. In terms of name recognition yes. I think It really depends on what you plan to major in. For instance, Georgia State's Management Information Systems program is ranked 10th in the nation, right behind NYU. Now if you are looking to go for Marketing then Emory would definitely be the better choice.

Don't get me wrong, I'm no expert but as I continue to research and ask questions I'm finding that although name recognition is important, if you plan to stay local I'm not sure it is all that important. I do agree that if you are looking to have a shot at Emory you may want to be above 600. Bringing your Verbal score up will get you there. Then, again, some people write killer essays, haver stellar undergrad, awesome references, parents work for the school. . . :lol: . . .etc. and end up accepted. You never know.

I agree if you think your score makes you a strong candidate for your dream school there is no need to re-take GMAT. If you are confident that your low verbal score is not because of lack of preparation or have application deadline sure take it right away. If not I would suggest to work hard and take it when you are ready.
Time is best spent spending time with family/ prep for essays or just getting life back. As for school comparison it all depends on what you want. I would suggest you go through the schools review on this forum. They are organized as clusters and give good information.
