The subject here is Donizetti's Gemma di Vergy, so it is the one referred to as "it" here.
The underlined phrase uses "on account of" which essentially means "due to" or "because of" which makes it unnecessarily wordy and complex. The meaning that is conveyed here us that the opera is not frequently produced because it requires singers with virtuosic ability.
Option C conveys the meaning in the simplest form and hence is the correct option. All other options are awkwardly wordy.

Hi - This is a Kaplan question of the day. Here is the official explanation.
Answer C The use of on account of with a gerund (requiring), lacks a necessary reference to what requires singers. Choice (A) can be eliminated. Choice (D) would be grammatically correct, though awkward, if it were replaced with its.
Choice (B), while an allowable construction, uses the plural pronoun their to refer to the singular Gemma di Vergy (remember: as well as does not create a compound subject the way and does). Choice (E)'s being that is unidiomatic after the adverb mostly. Only Choice (C) remains, which correctly creates a causal clause with a subject it correctly referring to the singular Gemma di Vergy, and a verb requires, rather than a gerund. Also note that singers, and not a singer, is the correct object of requires, since it takes more than one singer to fill all the roles.
