Hey guys! I've been in and around this website for quite a while before even creating an account. I am looking to shift from my field of basic research into Business development and would like to know if that's even possible in the first place. If possible, which B schools should I target and how would I go about explaining it to the Adcoms. I've split this post into 3 parts; Education, Work Experience, Reasons for shift
Education
I completed my Udergrad in Genetic Engineering from SRM University in India. I graduated with a decent CGPA of 8.5/10. As part of my Undergrad, I interned at Yale University for 6 months researching HIV Biology. I then completed my M.Sc in Medical Virology from the University of Manchester in 2017. I graduated 2nd in my class with 71% and it was quite a challenging course. I then applied and got into a PhD program in Griffith University in Gold Coast, Australia in HIV Vaccine research. But within 6-7 months, I realised this is not what I want to do in life and withdrew from the program.
Work Experience
As soon as I finished my undergrad, I worked for a year in TCS as a consultant. My role was to lead a team of animators to design and develop interactive college courses for IIT Madras which we were able to do. I was also in charge of collaborating with IIT Madras to develop protein rich packaged drinking water, to solve the problem of protein malnutrition in South India. This project was stalled after we provided proof of concept.
After I completed my Masters, I worked at a Start up company for about 4 months developing sunscreen products from biological sources. Currently, I am employed as a business development manger with a Healthcare consultant and am responsible for bringing in new businesses. Within my first month I was able to bring in 3 new hospitals to our portfolio.
Although I am 25 years old, I have a work experience of only ~18 months
Reasons for Shift
Even before I applied for my undergrad, I wanted to a bachelors in business studies. But, I was convinced by my family to have a basis in a particular field then to do an MBA. Once I entered into the field of life sciences, I was corralled into the mind set that the only future is to do a Masters and a PhD. Even when I was contemplating deferring my admission into the University of Manchester, I was told by friends and family that that would be a mistake as I had a basic science degree and would eventually need a PhD. It tool me a good 5 years to get out of that mentality and start exploring what I want to do
My reasons to do an MBA is quite simple. 10-15 years down the line, I want to be in a decision making capacity in either the Entertainment industry (Including gaming industry) or in a sports franchise. Like just about everyone in the world, I used to armchair quarterback every decision made by my favourite team or question every decision made in movies and TV shows. In my mind, I want to stop simply complaining and do something about it.
I am planning on writing my CAT and GMAT exams in November and December. I wanted to get an Idea as to what would be some good B-schools to target, what would be the GMAT score I should be aiming at to get in with a scholarship and given my profile, If I even stand a chance of getting in
