During the test, I solved it as follows :

2 statements not sufficient on their own, when taken together, Y=76=Median,Z-X=22 & then I substituted Z=76+a, X= 76-a in Z-X=22 & found values of a & X, I want to know what exactly is wrong with my approach , as OA is E

If x < y < z, what is the value of x?

The range of these three numbers is 22.
The median of these three numbers is 76.

(A) Statement (1) ALONE is sufficient, but statement (2) alone is not sufficient.

(B) Statement (2) ALONE is sufficient, but statement (1) alone is not sufficient.

(C) BOTH statements TOGETHER are sufficient, but NEITHER statement ALONE is sufficient. your answer

(D) EACH statement ALONE is sufficient.

(E) Statements (1) and (2) TOGETHER are NOT sufficient. correct.

During the test, I solved it as follows :

please note that Y is median of X and Z,not mean of X and Z.
so assuming Z=76+a, X= 76-a is incorrect.

1. Range = 22. Doesn't say anything about x. insuff
2. Median = y = 76. Doesn't say anything about x. insuff

Together, y = 76 and (x,z) could be (75,97), (74,96)... insuff

The range of these three numbers is 22.
The median of these three numbers is 76.


1) z - x = 22, not helpful.

2) y = 76, not helpful

1 + 2
75, 76, 97
76, 76, 98
74, 76, 96 and so on

Not sufficient, hence E
