stem gives us, avg temp for July 12th - 19th = a
avg temp for july 13-18=b
where a=(x+y+6b)/8
where x = temp for july 12th
y = temp for 19th
a=b+5
we need to find x
statement I: b=y-4
a=y-4+5 or a=y+1
y+1=(x+y+6(y-4))/8
8y+8=x+y+6y-24
y=x-32
which gives us,(2x+6b-32)=8b+40 or x-b=36
insufficient.
statement II: a=84
a=b+5 or b = 79.
insufficient.
together x-b=36, and b=79. so x = 115 = one very hot day!
