Let's let the total number of visitors equal V.

80 percent of the visitors to the Smithsonian Institution were United States citizens

United States citizens = .80V

50 percent of the remaining visitors were Canadian or Mexican citizens

Remaining visitors = V - .80V = .20V

Canadian or Mexican citizens = .50 x .20V = .10V

50 percent of the visitors who were not citizens of the United States, Canada, or Mexico were citizens of European countries

Visitors who were not citizens of the United States, Canada, or Mexico = .20V - .10V = .10V

Citizens of European countries = .50 x.10V = .05V

The number of United States citizens who visited the Smithsonian that year was approximately how many times the number of citizens of European countries who visited the Smithsonian that year?

United States citizens/Citizens of European countries = .80V/.05V = 16

The correct answer is (D).

During a certain year, 80 percent of the visitors to the Smithsonian Institution were United States citizens, 50 percent of the remaining visitors were Canadian or Mexican citizens, and 50 percent of the visitors who were not citizens of the United States, Canada, or Mexico were citizens of European countries. The number of United States citizens who visited the Smithsonian that year was approximately how many times the number of citizens of European countries who visited the Smithsonian that year?

Let the no. of visitors to the Smithsonian Institution = 100.
The no. of visitors to the Smithsonian Institution who were United States citizens = 80
The no. of visitors to the Smithsonian Institution who were Canadian or Mexican citizens = 50%x(100-80)=10
The no. of visitors to the Smithsonian Institution who were citizens of European countries = 50%x(100-80-10)=5

The number of United States citizens who visited the Smithsonian that year was approximately the number of citizens of European countries who visited the Smithsonian that year = 80/5 = 16

Hence D

Lets use simple numbers to better understand

Total Visitors= 100
US visitors= 80
Canada & Mexico= .5*20=10 20 represents the remainder
Total not US, Canada & Mexico =10
European 10*.05=5

US/European = 80/5
