2/3 of the total = 48000

Total = 72000

1/3 of 72000 = 1/3*72000 = 24.

Solution

Given:
• During drought the amount of water in a pond was reduced by a third
• Amount of water in the pond immediately after the drought = 48000 gallons

To find:
• The number of gallons of water lost during the drought

Approach and Working:
• Let us assume the initial amount of water in the pond = x gallons
• After drought, the amount of water lost = $$\frac{x}{3}$$
• Thus, the amount of water left in the pond, after the drought = $$x – \frac{x}{3} = \frac{2x}{3} = 48000$$
o Implies, x = 72,000

Therefore, amount of water lost = $$\frac{x}{3} = \frac{72000}{3} = 24000$$

Hence, the correct answer is Option B
