During a drought the amount of water in a pond was reduced by a third. If the amount of water in the pond was 48,000 gallons immediately after the drought, how many thousands of gallons of water were lost during the drought?

A. 16
B. 24
C. 36
D. 64
E. 72

2/3 of the total = 48000

Total = 72000

1/3 of 72000 = 1/3*72000 = 24.

B is the correct answer.

Solution

Given:
    • During drought the amount of water in a pond was reduced by a third
    • Amount of water in the pond immediately after the drought = 48000 gallons

To find:
    • The number of gallons of water lost during the drought

Approach and Working:
    • Let us assume the initial amount of water in the pond = x gallons
    • After drought, the amount of water lost = \(\frac{x}{3}\)
    • Thus, the amount of water left in the pond, after the drought = \(x – \frac{x}{3} = \frac{2x}{3} = 48000\)
      o Implies, x = 72,000

Therefore, amount of water lost = \(\frac{x}{3} = \frac{72000}{3} = 24000\)

Hence, the correct answer is Option B

Answer: B
