From (2), if friday's high temperature decreased the overall average by a degree, then average high for the rest of the days was 87.

So, 87 * 4 + F = 86 * 5 => F = 430 - 348 = 82

During a five day period, monday through friday, the average was 86 degrees. what was the high temperature on Friday?

(2) The high temperature on Friday reduced the average high temperature for the week by 1 degree.

can someone elaborate on how (2) allows us to determine the temperature on Friday?

i am supposing that average high tempreture for the week, 5 days, is 86.
if 86 is reduced to 85, then fridays tempreture, everything holding the same, should be reduced by 5 to 81.

update. i missed that 86 is average after 1 deg reduction from the previous average. then it should be 87-5=82.

agreed.
