During a particular year in city X, there were an average (arithmetic mean) of 16,000 car accidents per day on weekends and an average of 40,000 per day on each of the other days of the week. Which of the following is nearest to the total number of accidents last year?

A. 0.12 million
B. 1.2 million
C. 11.3 million
D. 12.1 million
E. 121 million
Solution:

The number of car accidents, in thousands, per week, is 16 x 2 + 40 x 5 = 232. Therefore, the number of car accidents in a year is 232 x 52 = 12,064 thousand or 12.064 million.
