$$47+40-x=76$$
Hence, $$x=11$$

As there are explicit methods to solve overlapping sets problems, we'll just use them without thinking too much.
This is a Precise approach.

The relevant equation is all A + all B - both A and B = total. In our case, this is
customers who bought washers + customers who bought driers - customers who bought both = total number of washers/driers sold.
47 + 40 - x = 76
x = 87 - 76 = 11.
