andybond87 - I am curious about the source of this question. Could you list the source in the problem?

During the second half of the last century, as airplanes replaced ships as the means of transportation, it was widely anticipated that the time spent in transit by the average traveler would decrease considerably.

as airplanes replaced ships as the means of transportation, it was widely anticipated that

as airplanes replaced ships as the means of transportation, it was anticipated widely that

with ships being replaced by airplanes as the means of transportation, there was wide anticipation that

as ships were replacing airplanes, many anticipated that

airplanes replacing ships as the means of transportation produced anticipation widely that

i dont think that gmat makes us choose between b and a.

c is wrong because "being". moreover, during ... modifies replaced so, during...phrase should be placed near replace, not a noun "ship". if we have a clause, during...phrase can be placed at the beginning of the clause.
d is wrong because we do not have clear reason for using progressive tense.
e is wrong because airplain produced is not logic in our real world.

Two questions:

1. Why is E wrong- can someone please point out the exact error?
"airplanes replacing ships as the means of transportation produced anticipation widely that"

2. "widely anticipated" vs "anticipated widely" (option A and B)- how to identify which one is correct? I request explanation please.
