Not trying to sell you anything here, but you should consider having conversations with some alums as well as admissions consultants. You won't be able to close out this topic on a chat/thread.

That said, here's what I think:
- Though nothing should be called impossible, the 2Y Harvard and Stanford FTMBA programs will come very close to this category; MSx is an option and so are MIT Sloan Fellows and LBS Sloan Masters
- A lot really depends on what your candidacy looks like - being a civil servant itself is not enough; your scores, motivations for MBA, post-MBA goals, recommendation letters, achievements showcasing leadership, impact, initiative, etc., everything matters
- Equally crucial for you will be deep research on schools
- International schools do not operate the way Indian schools do - there is no concept of Day 0, Day 1 placements. You are on your own at international schools and have to run after a job; it won't come to your doorstep

The list goes on...

Hope this helps. Should you wish to discuss further, I'm happy to speak. You can DM or write on catalysts.success@gmail.com

Regards
Dee

Hi, Thanks for the input, i am from India, 37 years of age and i want to do do from one of the Ivy league colleges and if that's a feasibility at all, like Harvard wants an average of 5+ years of experience, would such cases like mine would even be considered .
Thanks & regards

The E-MBA will, most likely, have to be in your country of residence. An FTMBA with 12+ years is doable but in select countries and schools - it depends on what is on your shortlist. MSx is a 1Y FTMBA at Stanford and worth a try, though you may be on the younger side. Study the class profile to gauge your initial view.

Hi All,

This is Shruti. I would appreciate if you can help me suggest which top tier schools i can apply to with my level of work experience of 12+ years and as it's a total career change from being a Civil servant to corporate world, if there will be placements for me from those schools too. E-MBA, MBA OR MSx- which one will be apt for me.
I would appreciate a candid insight & response please.

Regards,

Shruti

Thank you for sharing your profile, shrutijain485 . With over 12 years of experience as a civil servant and your aspiration to transition into the corporate world, your situation is both unique and inspiring. Given your age (37) and professional background, choosing the right type of MBA program is crucial, not just in terms of admission, but also in terms of post-MBA opportunities, career services, and ROI.

Let’s begin with traditional full-time MBA programs like Harvard, Wharton, or Columbia. These programs typically attract candidates with 3-8 years of experience, and the average age is around 28-30. While there are outliers, candidates with 12+ years of experience are rare and must present an exceptional reason for pursuing a 2-year program designed for younger professionals. Moreover, structured on-campus recruiting at such schools usually caters to younger cohorts. Since you're making a significant career switch and may require placement support, these programs might not offer the most practical fit. But yes, consider exploring more FTMBA programs.

Executive MBA (EMBA) programs at schools like Wharton, Columbia, LBS, and INSEAD are designed for professionals like you, with 10 to 20 years of experience. EMBA programs are great for accelerating leadership within an existing sector or company, but explore about the placement/career transitions. If your goal is a full pivot into the corporate world with a need for active career services, then EMBA may fall short in helping you achieve that transition.

About the other programs that may best align with your profile: MSx programs, the Stanford MSx, MIT Sloan Fellows, and LBS Sloan Masters in Leadership and Strategy. These are full-time, one-year programs specifically created for mid- to senior-level professionals looking to pivot, accelerate, or transform their careers. These programs value diversity in background and have seen successful applicants from government, nonprofit, and military sectors. Network with alumni regarding the career support, academic experience, and MBA electives. MSx, in particular, has a good track record of helping leaders from non-traditional backgrounds make big moves into entrepreneurship, corporate strategy, and global organizations.

MIT Sloan Fellows can be another good option, especially if your interests lean toward analytical problem-solving and innovation. LBS Sloan, while Europe-based, offers significant global exposure and a slightly more intimate class size, which is beneficial for leadership development.

At this point, we'd recommend reflecting on a few key questions: What kind of role or industry are you targeting post-MBA? Are you open to relocating globally or planning to return to India? Are you well-networked and confident in managing your transition independently? These questions will help you further narrow down which programs will not only accept you but support your success beyond the classroom.

To move forward, focus your efforts on preparing a compelling narrative that ties your civil service impact with your vision for the private sector. These programs value thoughtful, mission-driven leadership. Also, if needed, start preparing for the GMAT/GRE to demonstrate academic readiness. While some mid-career programs may waive the score, a strong performance can still boost your candidacy.

The key will be choosing programs that are built for experienced professionals and making sure your application clearly articulates your story, your goals, and the “why now.” You’re not too late, if anything, you're perfectly positioned to step into a new chapter with the right program supporting you.

If you’d like, we’d love to learn more about your journey and profile, and provide a thoughtful assessment on your School selection and chances. Feel free to Book a Session.

Hi shrutijain485

Much of the planning around which schools to apply to, and which programs to choose will depend on what kind of career you are trying to build in the corporate sector. Needless to say, that in itself will have its dependencies on the kind of projects you have managed as a civil servant, because this late in the career, the schools would like to understand your functional, technical, industry specific as well as stakeholder management skills in detail, to align them with prospective career opportunities that may be available to students graduating from respective colleges. Thinking of an MBA as a launchpad in an entirely new geography will come with its own set of challenges, so if the majority of your experience has been in India, I would like to candidly say that it will be much easier to set yourself up for success in India with an MBA. You can always move abroad later. Indian B-schools, at least the top ones, are well known globally and have a vast global network that you can tap into.

Feel free to speak

Best wishes
