PRINCETON REVIEW OFFICIAL EXPLANATION:
D
This sentence contains a subject/verb disagreement. Each is short for each one and is singular, so it calls for the singular verb was. You will quickly eliminate most of the answer choices if you focus on this error.
(A) No. This choice has an error in subject/verb agreement. Each is singular and needs a singular verb.
(B) No. Rearranging the sentence does not get rid of the subject/ verb disagreement. The verb still needs to be was in order to agree with the subject each.
(C) No. Changing each to every one does not help. Every one is singular and needs the singular verb was.
(D) Yes. This choice is nearly identical to the original sentence except that it uses the correct verb was.
(E) No. The subject is still each, the verb is still were, and the sentence is still wrong. Plus, radically rearranging the sentence is rarely the solution to the grammar errors you’ll see on the GMAT.
