The median of odd number series is the middle one. For example, if you have three numbers, say,

1, 2, 3

The median is 2.

In the case mentioned, you have 45 boxes on shelf J and 44 boxes on K. This adds up to 45+44 = 89 boxes total. Since every box on J weights less than every box on K, if we sort out the weight from light to heavy, all the boxes on J will come before all the ones on K. This means the median will be the heaviest box on J.

we know that the 45th book would be the median..regardless..

we need to know the heaviest book in J..since that would be the 45th book..
