I came across this question in the forum.
Each of the vegetables in the store had been washed with vegetable wash before they were sold.
A) had been washed with vegetable wash before they were sold
B) was washed with vegetable wash before it was sold
C) was washed with vegetables washes before they were sold
D) had been washed with vegetable wash before it was sold
I chose B instead of D because it seems to me "before" indicates something complete in the past hence there is no need for Past Perfect? When facing GMAT, should we choose the safer bet D?

Here the time marker before makes the past perfect optional. So we can use option B as the meaning was conveyed properly.
