Let x be the number of novels and y the number of non-fiction books.

From the question stem, we can deduce the following information
$$x + y = 12$$ -> (1)
$$3x + 5y = 52$$ -> (2)

Substituting y = 12 - x from (1) in (2), $$3x + 5(12 - x) = 52$$

Solving for x, we get $$3x + 60 - 5x = 52$$ -> $$2x = 8$$ -> $$x = 4$$
Therefore, the number of novels discussed last year is 4(Option B)

number of novels the club discussed = n
total = 12 books
the number of nonfiction books = 12 – n

Given,
Club met 3 times to discuss each novel and 5 times to discuss each nonfiction book, and the club met 52 times

Therefore,
3n + 5(12 – n) = 52.

Solving n=4

Hence, B.
