earplugs worth a try

Question

hi guys

was browsing through some of the old posts in this forum and came across a suggestion about earplugs (though i don't remember the nick of the person who posted it, thanx anyways)...

went to the pharmacy and bought a pair....tried giving a small test in the evening and...wolah!...they seem to work for me....i was able to concentrate better....specially in the verbal section where the long RCs and complex CRs can be tough sometimes....

Though some other ppl have expressed their apprehensions about using earplugs....my 2 cents....get a pair and see if they work for you....

the most important is comfort. Some people get uncomfortable with something sticking in their ear (I'm one of them). Whatever your choice is, do your practice with whatever you need (barring calculators) so you will feel at ease on the day of the test. For me, I practice in my room where there is background noise (family members moving around), so I know I'm not going to be distracted. Another thign I do is to practice with those pencils that need sharpening (since those are the ones given at the test centre) as opposed to using a pen, or a mechanical pencil. This is important as the pencil gets blunt over time and for me, I find that quite irritating when I started my prep.

hey, about that pencil thing...don't they give a pen at the exam centers? can we take our own? can we ask them for one?

Yes it is about comfort. I have tried the earplugs and i can't explain how uncomfortable they feel. It actually distracted me even more. I couldn't even read a full question w/o adjusting the earplugs cos it kept feeling as if they ere going to drop off. I hate them and that doesn't mean it won't work for someone else.

I was very uncomfortable with ear plugs too. I used to get more focussed on Ear plugs than on the test :-D

. I think in the test, I did use ear plugs just to cover my ear ( not really plugged into the ear). See if that works any better.

Nope, they don't give you a pen. They give you 4 pencils (those kind that needs sharpening), and best of all, they don't provide you with a sharpener so you'll have to work with blunt pencils if you write pretty hard (like me). You're not allowed to bring anything in with you (no water bottles, no erasers, no pencils, no sharpeners), everything you need will be provided by the test center.

I got a ear plug before the exam, but never used it during my practice. The prometric center provided me with a head-phone during real GMAT. It was fantastic. It blocked all ambient noice. So be preparted to use the head phone if you are sensitive to noice.

ooops!....i have practised with a pen all along...i am more comfortable with one for the same reasons as mentioned by you...nothing i can do about it now...i am taking my test tomorrow... :roll:
