E

1) Only tells us how much was lost. Not suff
2) Only tells about how much was destroyed by pests.

Together.

we still dont know how much crop was there. Hence cannot find out the percent.

Ok many thanks for those of you who replied, really appreciate it..

That was the same answer that the book gave BUT ....still dont get it...why??

Because;

The question asks What PERCENT of the crop was lost due to the storm.

In the stem we learn that the crop was damaged by two causes; pests and hail.

In 2 the question states that 10% of the damage was caused by pests. Hence 90% of the damage was caused by the storm

So for the answrs that you gave:

microjohn: you wrote 90% is due to hail (answers the question)
jayanek: we dont know how much crop was there....(the question asks for a precent and not a fixed amount)

So my answer was B...

Sounds like another semantics job ..can anyone please explain???

Heya everyone just a quick question for you which i saw and still dont really get...see if you have the same problem as me??!!

Question : Orchard suffered damge due to a hailstorm and attacks by pests. What percent of the crop was lost due to the storm?

1. Total crop losses = 6 tonnes
2. Pests destroyed 10 percent of the crop Note! it says "of the corp" not the damaged crop!

Please let me know what you think the answer to this question is...cheers

Pests destroyed 10% of TOTAL CROP- we dont know what percent hailstorm destroyed;

6 tons / Total Crop= 10%+Hailstorm tons / Total tons

I hope I explained;

I got E as well. If the question said 'an orchard was destroyed...' then you could assume that the entire thing was destroyed, but since it says it suffered damage, that means that only a portion was damaged.
