Pelihu,
I think you confusing my argument with ishcabibble additional comments. I'm stating that the average GMAT score is 550 tops. That means that the majority of people are not going to be able to go to a top 25 school. It doesnt matter if 20,000 people apply to Harvard because only 900 are going to get accepted. And if you have a 550 your probably not going to be one of the luck ones. The rest of the people have to go somewhere. Add up all the the spots at the top 25 programs and you probably looking at no more than 10,000 people. There is definitely more than 100,000 people entering b-school each year. Heck in a few years there will probably be more people at the U of Phoenix. You can make fun of the school all you want but there are people out there trying to better their lives and their stuck with a 530. What do want them to do, give up?
A lot those people may take a shot at Columbia, Tuck, Darden, etc. but it doesnt matter because most wont get accepted. There taking a shot at their dream school. That's fine, but they also have to sit down figure out where they have a real shot. That may involve deciding between "Nebraska and UC Davis" because with a 590 that's where they have a real chance. I think it's great that everyone on this forum can get 700+ GMAT and people who get 640 think they bombed the test. But in the real world most of the people are fighting to get 600.
I think there is a difference between a dream job and a good job. The average college graduate is making $30k. I dont think they are going to complain about a top 3 consulting firm or a fortune 20, they're looking to better themselves out of a dead end job.
I think it's great that Car and Driver publishes Ferarri reviews. I love to read them and dream about owning them one day. Hell it even motivates me to work harder sometimes. But was my point was if those were the ONLY reviews they published it wouldnt help me decide on the car I'm going to actually buy. They would need a sub $30k sedan section for me.
I think your a very smart and accomplished person as are most of the people on this forum. I just think your forgeting that most people arent in a position as good as you are. I would guess that 75% of the applicants only have a shot at the top 25-100.
So my point is if person want's to go to b-school, works at a no name company, graduated from an average school and got a 590 GMAT what rankings do they look at to help them decide. Everyone cant score in the 80th percentile or above. There actually has to be 80% of the people below them for that to happen.
