Statistics lie - period.
The point of rankings the way pelihu and gixxer bring out are very interesting and thought provoking.
This is my simple example.
I am looking to apply at the elite schools (top 15) while my senior associate is looking to apply at ucla, usc, uc irvine and chapman university.
He has more work experience than me, probably the same GMAT score if not lower and better letters of recommendations.
Yet he made the conscious decision of limiting himself to these 4 schools, his first priority being UC Irvine. He is looking for an MBA to either vault himself to senior management in our office or to look for better prospects in the OC region. He does not want to give up his quality of life and move somewhere else.
I, on the other hand am willing to travel thousands of miles to the east coast, start afresh and look for a new career.
Should I classify myself as a rank worshipper while he is just another average joe in the 80% group. Don't think so.
It all boils down to choices.
Rankings are like a milestone - you see them to know how far you can go. Some folks look at regional schools because thats where they want to go, others look into Harvard because thats their sole goal.
I think most applicants (not representative of this forum) are looking for an MBA to simply better their careers (not change careers or double their pay packages) without uprooting themselves from their prior advancements in life.
We, on the other hand are a different bunch. When I mean we, I mean almost everyone I know on this forum or read his/her posts. Almost everyone on this forum is already an over-achiever. For us an MBA is more than a ladder jumper, its a booster rocket. Its not doubling our salaries, or getting the cushy job, but to do something that we truly desire and salivate over. in short we are pushing ourselves harder to see whether we can reach the cliched moon.
Our thoughts and attitudes will differ a lot from the rest of the applicants. Hence we will not always reach a common ground and rankings will invoke different emotions in us.
My worthless 2 cents.
