This is a very simple question on word problems, which is why it’s a good question to solve to learn how to frame simple equations.

Developing the right variables is the key. Since there are three unknowns, we will have 3 variables. Let the number of games won by Eleanor’s, Christina’s and Joanna’s teams be E, C and J respectively. Then,

E = 3C, which can be equation 1.

C = J – 4, which can be equation 2.

Given J = 10, C = 6 and therefore E = 18.

This means Eleanor’s team won 18 games. The correct answer option is B.

Hope this helps!

Eleanor's football team has won 3 times as many games as Christina's football team. Christina's football team has won 4 fewer games than Joanna's team. If Joanna's team won 10 games last year, how many games did Eleanor's team win?

A. 17
B. 18
C. 19
D. 20
E. 21

e=3c
c=j-4
j=10
c=10 -4=6
e=3*6=18

IMO B
