Argument Summary:
A study claims that acupuncture is no more effective than doing nothing in treating Carpel Tunnel Syndrome (CTS).

We are asked to weaken this conclusion, i.e., show that acupuncture may actually have a positive effect.

Let’s evaluate the choices:

(A) Specially designed wrist strengthening exercises have been shown to be more effective than acupuncture for long-term treatment of CTS.
→ This compares acupuncture to another treatment, not to no treatment at all. It doesn’t weaken the study's conclusion.

(B) The number of acupuncturists offering relief for CTS has increased in the past year.
→ This is irrelevant to the effectiveness of acupuncture.

(C) The health plans preferred by the vast majority of companies have begun addressing the CTS issue by offering acupuncture to the list of treatments fully covered by insurance.
→ Also irrelevant. Insurance coverage does not prove effectiveness.

(D) New advances in keyboard design should reduce the incident rate of CTS.
→ This talks about prevention, not the treatment or effectiveness of acupuncture. Irrelevant.

(E) While undergoing acupuncture treatment, CTS sufferers have reported they can type comfortably for a greater number of hours than before they began treatment.
→ This directly contradicts the study's claim that acupuncture has no beneficial effect. If patients report real improvement, it weakens the study's conclusion.

Correct Answer: E

Bunuel
Employees who spend long hours typing on a computer keyboard often develop Carpel Tunnel Syndrome (CTS), an inflammation of the wrist tendons. A study of the effectiveness of various common treatment methods found that acupuncture has no more beneficial effect than has no treatment at all.

Which of the following statements, if true, would most weaken the results of this above study?

(A) Specially designed wrist strengthening exercises have been shown to be more effective than acupuncture for long-term treatment of CTS.

(B) The number of acupuncturists offering relief for CTS has increased in the past year.

(C) The health plans preferred by the vast majority of companies have begun addressing the CTS issue by offering acupuncture to the list of treatments fully covered by insurance.

(D) New advances in keyboard design should reduce the incident rate of CTS

(E) While undergoing acupuncture treatment, CTS sufferers have reported they can type comfortably for a greater number of hours than before they began treatment.

Correct answer is E.

As it is the only statement which explains acupuncture is beneficial and hence weaken the argument.

Official Explanation

This is a Weaken question. Unlike most Weaken questions, there is no full argument here with evidence. Instead, there is just the conclusion of a study.

The study focuses on treatments for CTS, a problem caused by extensive typing. The study suggests that acupuncture is no more effective than no treatment. In other words, acupuncture does nothing to help treat CTS.

To weaken this claim, the correct answer must show that acupuncture is effective and can help those who spend long hours typing.

(E) is correct as it directly contradicts the study. This shows that acupuncture allowed sufferers to type longer than before they had any treatment, so it is better than nothing! (A) just points out the effectiveness of other treatments. This has nothing to do with the reported results of the study, which only compare acupuncture to no treatment at all. (B) and (C) are irrelevant because they address the issue of availability of acupuncture, not its effectiveness.
(D) brings up prevention of CTS, which has no effect on evaluating acupuncture as a treatment
