I've never heard this, but I highly doubt it. Unless the company has some clause in it's code of conduct that says that employees are forbidden from posting inaccurate personal info on the web, I don't see how they have cause to fire you.

I think at most, even if your employer took the time to cross reference your personal info with the internet, they'd talk to you to find out why there is a discrepancy.
thanks so much for the response!! my supervisor told me about this and i doubt it too. i told her that if the company wants to verify the personal information, i can provide the official documentations, but she said it does not really matter if i have the official documents. she knows there are 2 people who got fired because of this issues. i am not sure if she lies to scare me or if it's real. however, i think it's normal that people wouldn't put in their real person information because of the network security issue.

Fully agree with you - I don't see how my wrong birthday date or other information on some random website impacts my ability to perform duties unless I am a political or a public figure where this could potentially be a liability.

Perhaps time to take the GMAT and write those Bschool applications :wink:

There is a strong possibility that the information is true; however, this is not to say that
such practices are acceptable or official norms. As a guide against unintended consequences,
users are strongly advised not to use their real names or personal data on public sites.

The results of such practices could be very disastrous and methinks the rule of thumb
will be to avoid posting sensitive information in the first place.

Some time ago the rumor was that potential employers would check the applicant's Myspace or Facebook accounts. If there were offensive pictures or language, then the applicant's chances of landing a job would be endangered.

But as one previous poster already mentioned, a good defense to this is to not use your real name (use a nickname or abbreviations instead). It's also a good idea to not have a picture of yourself in your profile picture.

This might raise a red flag but I don't think you'll get automatically fired.

I'd doubt that they could fire you for lying about your age on Facebook...
