I had a question about the B school background checks. I will be applying in Fall 2026 and want to be prepared for the required background checks. How far back do they go in employment history? I am an older student (37) making a career change, so my employment history goes back at least 15 years. The past 11 years have been in China, so I am not sure how that may impact background checks. I am also concerned I would not even know who to connect with at a company for HR purposes from employment 15 years ago. Any insight is appreciated.

Hi CleHai,

Generally, you should be prepared for a check around all the information you submit; we do not think you should worry about your years in China; in case schools are unable to garner the information they need, they can always reach out to you for additional proof. Besides, if you do not know how to connect with the HR, you could always share details of the manager you were working with and provide them an additional explanation wherever needed.

payslips are usually checked alongside bank statements may be required to show that salary was been credited to you..
alongside letter of appointment is usually asked to be submitted..

CleHai Rest assured that as long as your documents are in order and authentic, you need not worry about your background check process. Most schools will ask for your most recent salary slips. However, if you wish to provide consolidated documents from a longer period, you can certainly upload them along with the mandatory documents. You do not need to inform any past employers about your MBA plans, nor will the schools likely contact them. The background check will require references to be contacted only when needed.
