My personal reasons for obtaining an MBA are to help me progress into a management position, or gain knowledge if I were to start my own business. I'm not interested in working in banking/finance. I'm not looking to switch fields; although, I'm not opposed to that if there's a good opportunity. Initially, I intended to apply only to the University of Alberta's part-time MBA program because I live/work in Edmonton and the tuition is affordable (~$27,000). My GMAT score is higher than I targeted as I only wanted to go to UofA. Now I'm considering applying to better B-schools (e.g. Rotman) because I think my profile is competitive to get into any school I want (I'm not interested in going to a top 10 B-school because I can't afford it).
My question is, for my intent, would it be worth it for me to go to a better B-school than UofA for an MBA? Reading through forums and websites I get the impression that the B-school reputation is more important for someone interested in finance/banking. Also, my salary is already within the range of what an MBA graduate is expected to earn, so I'm not expecting a significant raise after completion of an MBA program. I've heard it would be better to get an MBA from a different school than from where I got my undergraduate degree. I'm just not sure if the increased tuition and having to re-locate (which could be a benefit, I would actually be interested to experience living in a different city) is worth it.
