The number of students is as much as the number of cats.

Not sure which one is correct...

I would go with equal simply because in the second sentence you're comparing quantities that are countable (you can count students) and the word "much" is used to describe amounts that cannot be counted like "much of the rainforest has been destroyed". I believe when you refer to quantities that can be counted you have to use the word "many".

He has owned many more cars than bikes. The cars require much more fuel.

I could be off on this, and I'm sure my explanation is pretty weak, but I'm rather new to this myself :oops:

The second sentence is wrong. It would be correct to say:

The number of students is greater than the number of cats ("the number of" is singular).

There is a OG question that says "EQUAL" is a broad term and prefer "as many as" when dealing with countables. It says Equal should be used only with Subjective/Non-countable quantities like "EQUAL Justice"..I don't remeber the question but I am 1000% confident..

Second sentence uses "much" with numbers

So I am reluctant to agree with both of those sentences.

is there any other choices such as the number of smth is the same as the number of smth
