Thank you both for your replies, these are very important perspectives for me.
I found the link from bb very informative.

Thanks for confirming IESE's reputation and value in the case method Emanuele.

Can I ask you if you know any students from IESE in my age range?

Unfortunately I don't have big names on my resume and my gmat is only 660.

But I am sharp and I think my experience could be valued to transition to another industry. Or at least I heard project man in gas is well regarded.

Also, I would target amazon and I ve seen people getting in at 36 from low ranked mba unis.

If I can share my very personal feel from pros and cons analysis, worst case scenario I will not find anything and get back to my industry but with a debt. But I believe in my professional life the mba will still be valuable.
Also, I would have an amazing experience to develop myself and take two years off work, which is rare in one's life.
This worth for me the extra money.

Thanks
Alessio

Your age is not a problem at all.

Consider that in European b schools, unlike the American ones, MBA candidates have on average 5 years of previous working experience so the median age is close to 30.

Moreover, for the “track” you are targeting (Industry, Tech) the employers tend to appreciate more senior candidates - that’s totally the case for Amazon.

On the other hand, in other industries it could be a topic that interviewers would stress to test your true motivation - for example in IB, but also here I have seen many smart colleagues that got the summer internship at 35+.

And don’t stress about your GMAT score, it’s only a “certification” to get the admissions - I didn’t hear of ANY employer asking for your GMAT score.

Finally, the point on having a “break” as you put it is totally valid (even though IESE is considered one of the toughest programs academically worldwide). After 5 years in strategy consulting I also wanted to have a break and it was probably 70% of the reasons why I wanted to do an MBA.

However you put it it’s a win win situation.

P.S.: Ma sei italiano? Scrivimi in DM che ci facciamo una chiacchierata a voce!

Just to close off the topic, at the end i chose IESE.

I have just finished my first year and I am very satisfied with the program. It is tough academically but you learn a lot!

After meeting many ESADE people and have worked with IESE fellow students, I have to say that the ESADE crew seems to me more on the younger side, both in terms of age and maturity. They are amazing people and I know the program has a good reputation, but from what they said, most students where not happy about a lot of professors. Also, the ESADE program is easier and the school quite relaxed.
I think I would have had more fun at ESADE but I am definitely learning more at IESE. I can also see why IESE has a strong brand, many companies come here to recruit or we have a preferred route to some of their recruiting.

The cost aspect, at the end, did not matter. Looking at the potential career progression and pay, the additional cost to go to IESE is insignificant.

My 2 cents would be, if you are admitted to both, go for the strongest school, the cost will pay off.

Hope this helps others.

Cheers

Alessio

Thank you so much Wonkaa for reporting back! It is super helpful for people making decisions and for the point of reference!
Good luck with all the preparations and heading over to do your MBA. This will be very exciting time. I am sure there will be plenty of stress and worries but these will be good worries. You will be in a good company for the next few years đź‘Ť
