I completely agree! A breakdown would be great. Given that they haven't updated the OG for how many ever years, I doubt that they will give us a breakdown!

Yes, that breackdown idea seems correct for me. Something exactly like the Kaplan result after you take a CAT on their CD. At least it can give you a better idea. Or maybe something limited in time, for exemple you have your score and then you can check out the answers of every problem you made wrong for 10mn and this could be just done on the testing center, just after you get your results...Anyway, there are a lot of possibilities.

Hjort, ETS doesn't want to give us answers and questions, however they can easily give us a breackdown, it's just a statistical tool to include in their test....

riteshb, I understand your position, I have the same one :) I'll take the test for the second time...good luck to you

Depending on where you take the test, perhaps you could issue a challenge under the Standardized Testing Act of 1979 . . .

Just wanted to let you guys know about the CAT (Common Admission Test) adminstrered in India for B School intake. Nearly 200,000 students write this exam every year for a few thousand seats.
Considered one of the toughest, CAT is a paper test and you have to chose the colleges you want to apply, before you write the exam. Once done you either get a "call" after a few months or you don't get any news. You don't even get a CAT score to know if you were rejected by 1 mark or by 40 marks. Also there is no option to change target colleges after the exam. You would just have to wait for one more year.

By that standard, I feel GMAT is pretty okay in letting is know the over all and split scores. But that doesn't justify why ETS should not explain a computerised exam score - why a person got low or why he got high. Probably, they do not want to expose their secret adaptive-test-logic.

Yeah, it is clear that they do not want to expose their secret adaptive-test-logic. However, in a legal issue, I am not sure it's totally acceptable. I mean, how do you know that they don't put a coefficient on your score depending on other criteria : age, origins, country, ... Of course I exagerate and I do it intentionally now but I would be curious to get any opnion from a lawyer for example... If I am not wrong, you can order ETS to give you back a copy of your exam showing your errors or something like that....like a tangible proof....

of course until now there has been no scandal and it seems the score is always very fair so no problem :) even for me, I score 570 and I know it's my real score

I just see an ethic problem with ETs scoring methods...

ps : if I got 235 at my next gmat attempt, I will suspect something...ETS punishment for this post :P :P :P

Have you tried writing to ETS and asking them for a more detailed breakdown of scores? I am curious how they would respond . . .

No. Never tried. If I get another bad score this time, I'll try...just to see what answer I would receive from ETS..maybe they'll send something to me because I don't think a lot of people write a letter to them to get this kind of information...
