I'm going with E.

A. until almost 1900, historians did not begins seriously to research - don't think "until almost" parallels "Even though", and begins is wrong
B. until almost 1900 historians had not begun seriously researching - "begun seriously researching" is wrong, I think it should be "began to seriously research" given the tense of the sentence that follows
C. not until almost 1900 were historians to begin seriously to research - "begin seriously to research" is wrong
D. it was not almost until 1900 when historians began to seriously research - "almost until 1900" is illogical in this sentence, it should be "until almost 1900"
E. it was not until almost 1900 that historians began to seriously research - correct
