Re: Everyone sitting in the waiting room of the schools athletic office [#permalink]

Everyone sitting in the waiting room of the school’s athletic office this morning at nine o’clock had just registered for a beginners tennis clinic. John, Mary, and Teresa were all sitting in the waiting room this morning at nice o’clock. No accomplished tennis player would register for a beginners tennis clinic.

If the statements above are true, which one of the following must also be true on the basis of them?

(A) None of the people sitting in the school’s athletic office this morning at nine o’clock had ever played tennis.

(B) Everyone sitting in the school’s athletic office this morning at nine o’clock registered only for a beginners tennis clinic.

(C) John, Mary, and Teresa were the only people who registered for a beginners tennis clinic this morning.

(D) John, Mary, and Teresa were the only people sitting in the waiting room of the school’s athletic office this morning at nine o’clock.

(E) Neither John nor Teresa is an accomplished tennis player.

All A's (sitting in the waiting room of the school’s athletic office) are B's (beginners tennis clinic.)
All C's (John, Mary, and Teresa) are A's (all sitting in the waiting room)
No D's (Accomplished tennis player) are A's

Only possible choice is (E), apart from that the question can be solved using the options....

(A) Ever playing and accomplished tennis player are different altogather.
(B) Restatement (Highlighted) of stimulus (No new information)
(C) & (D) only restricts the options, there may be others...

Left with only (E)

(A) None of the people sitting in the school’s athletic office this morning at nine o’clock had ever played tennis. - WRONG. Unlikely that they never played. We can't be sure.

(B) Everyone sitting in the school’s athletic office this morning at nine o’clock registered only for a beginners tennis clinic. - WRONG. Both red text are wrong.

(C) John, Mary, and Teresa were the only people who registered for a beginners tennis clinic this morning. - WRONG. Like D only there can still be some more.

(D) John, Mary, and Teresa were the only people sitting in the waiting room of the school’s athletic office this morning at nine o’clock. - WRONG. Not the only people. There might still be some.

(E) Neither John nor Teresa is an accomplished tennis player. - CORRECT. Leaving Mary doesn't matter since what is said in this choice isinferable.

Answer E.
