Executive Assessment: Is 152 the Magic Score in 2021-22?If you are preparing to apply to a top EMBA program that requires an Executive Assessment (EA) score – like Columbia, Booth, or Wharton – you are likely wondering what score is high enough to be competitive. Do you have to score close to 160? Is 153 good enough? 155? 152? 150?
Over the last few years, nearly all of our EMBA candidates at
MBA Admit.com have opted to take the EA instead of the GMAT or GRE. The vast majority of scores we saw in 2021 ranged between 152-155, which are scores that most top schools have seen as a good performance. A score around 146 looks very low for most top programs. The standout scores were 160 or above.
Many of the top business schools will tell prospective clients precisely what they wish to see in an EA score. For example, Booth has stated that 150 is a reasonable score. Columbia has indicated EA scores between 148-150 or higher are acceptable for its candidates. As usual, Wharton has indicated the highest EA bar: it prefers to see a quant score of 12 or higher, and an overall score of around 155 or higher for many candidates.
What EA score puts an application at risk for a rejection based on the score? For male applicants to Wharton, a score below 152 can put an application at risk; female applicants to Wharton have more latitude to be at 150 or higher. At other schools like Booth or Columbia, a score below 149 can put candidates in the danger zone.
For overrepresented profiles – candidates who are part of a pool that has a lot of applicants, like Indian foreign national men or East Asian foreign national men – Wharton will often want a higher score. A score of 157 or higher is sometimes needed for such candidates to have highly competitive applications.
There are exceptions, of course. Candidates can sometimes override a less-than-ideal EA score if their other qualifications are outstanding and well-presented in their applications. In attempting to override a less-than-ideal EA score, be certain to highlight your other strengths well in your application and also showcase through your other credentials what the admissions committees refer to as “quantitative readiness.”
