Columbia Business School has announced the following MBA application deadlines for the 2017-2018 admissions season.
August Entry
Early Decision Deadline: October 4, 2017
Merit Based Fellowship Deadline: January 5, 2018
Regular Decision Deadline: April 11, 2018
J-Term
Application Deadline: October 4, 2017

***

Students may enroll in either August or January. The CBS admissions website notes that the paths are identical in terms of competitiveness of admissions, academic rigor, and student resources, but they differ in terms of timing and the opportunity to complete a summer internship.

The August entry has two review periods — early decision and regular decision. Because CBS uses a rolling admissions process, it is always to your advantage to apply well before the deadline.

All applications are due at 11:59 p.m. EST on the day of the deadline.

For additional information, please visit the Columbia’s MBA admissions website.

Best Timing for a CBS Early Decision Application?

Columbia’s Early Decision admissions season for the August-start full-time MBA program stretches from May 2017 through October 4, 2017. It is a rolling admissions process, so the admissions committee reviews applications as they are submitted.

What is the ideal timing for submission? Is there such a thing as applying “too late” in the Early Decision cycle?

Historically, it does seem that when a candidate submits an application within the very last week of the Early Decision cycle, they face harder odds for admission. By then, the admissions committee has already admitted a healthy number of Early Decision candidates and may have reached its targets for some groups of students, such as the overrepresented candidate with an engineering background. So, in the ideal world, mobilize your application much earlier, so that you can submit it by June or July. Consider this breakdown of submission timing:

May 2017: Application available

May-June – Early in the Early Decision application cycle

July – Approaching the midpoint of the Early Decision application cycle

August – Past the midpoint of the Early Decision application cycle

September – Getting late in the Early Decision application cycle

If you submit your application in August, you can still fare well, but you will be applying after the midpoint of the admissions cycle. By mid-September, you are reaching the last weeks of the ED period, and your odds will have narrowed. Success is still possible even then, but as a general principle with rolling admissions, the sooner you apply the more seats are still available and hence your odds for success will be greater.
