A. Government regulations regarding the treatment of effluents before being emptied into the water resources require strict adherence and carry heavy penalties for any deviations.
This does not directly support or refute the claim. It merely mentions regulations but does not explain how the exposure might occur. Irrelevant.
B. The agricultural community along the Berad is self-sufficient in its food supply with most of its produce coming from the fields irrigated by the Berad.
This strengthens the claim because it suggests an alternative route of exposure to the effluents: through the food supply. Even if the drinking water is treated, crops irrigated by contaminated river water could be a source of toxic exposure, which supports the health officials' claim. This strengthens the claim.
C. The Municipal Corporation of the community uses the highest grade of chloramine, a residual disinfectant, before the distribution of water.
This supports the quality of water treatment but does not strengthen the claim that industrial effluents are responsible for health issues. Irrelevant.
D. Diseases of the immune and the endocrine systems can be caused by autoimmune responses triggered by toxic substances making their way into the bodies of the people.
This describes a possible mechanism for how diseases might develop due to toxic substances but does not provide specific information about how the population is exposed to the effluents. Weakly relevant but does not strongly strengthen the claim.
E. The Municipal Corporation of the community has been regularly receiving complaints about increasing incidences of Asthma, a respiratory disorder also caused by heavy air pollution.
This introduces the possibility of air pollution as a factor, but the focus of the passage is on waterborne effluents, not air pollution. Irrelevant to the main claim.

I got confused by the wording of the passage - "Their claim is not undermined by the fact that the drinking water in the community" and then the QS asks us to strengthen despite the evidence (as I understand it).

I wonder if this kind of wording is a valid wording for GMAT.

Thoughts?

how about option C here? If we know that the municipality treats the water before supplying it to the residents, we have a reason to believe that the river is polluted with effluents and that the fact that drinking water in the community is tested negative for effluents is due to the treatment by municipal corp?
