Frankly speaking I dont get what externally tangent circle means and whether this concept is really tested in GMAT.

Externally tangent circles with centers at points A and B have radii of lengths 5 and 3, respectively. A line externally tangent to both circles intersects ray AB at point C. What is BC?
Consider the picture

from the properties of the rectanglar triangle we can write
\(\frac{a}{b}=\frac{5}{3}\)
(1) \(3a=5b\)
from the figure and the stem we get
\(a-b=8\)
(1) then become
\(3a=5(a-8)\)
\(3a=5a-40\)
\(2a=40\)
\(a=20\)
\(b=BC=12\)
(A) 4
(B) 4.8
(C) 10.2
(D) 12
(E) 14.4
