OFFICIAL EXPLANATION

Which of the following most logically completes the argument?

Farmers producing cotton have found that by feeding an iron-based pigment through the irrigation system of a field, the color of the cotton fibers can be altered. Since most textile manufacturers prefer having complete control over the coloration of the cotton products they produce, no interest has been shown in cotton that has been pigmented in this way. However, it is likely that the method will be implemented because __________.

A. profits from cotton farming have been declining for several years, and farmers are in need of new ways to earn income

Incorrect.

This is a "Complete the Argument" format question. The missing argument part follows the reason conjunction because, so it's a premise, which supports the conclusion. Therefore, this is a Conclusion Strengthening question:

Premise A: farmers can change the color of cotton by adding a pigment to the water
    +
Premise B: manufacturers are not interested in this pigmented cotton since they need to be able to add the color themselves
    =
Prediction: the method used to pigment cotton will be used

    Strengthening Data: ?

You are required to complete the argument with data that supports the conclusion.

This answer choice neither strengthens nor weakens the conclusion and, therefore, cannot logically complete the argument. Since textile manufacturers are not interested in the pigmented cotton, there is no reason to believe that the method will generate income for the farmers.

B. irrigation systems can be almost 100% automated, allowing cotton farmers to avoid unnecessary water wastage while preventing crop loss

Incorrect.

This answer choice neither strengthens nor weakens the conclusion and, therefore, cannot logically complete the argument. The argument does not deal with irrigation systems in general, or their advantages.

C. feeding iron-based pigments through irrigation pipes leaves a residue that can result in blockage or corrosion that is difficult to repair

Incorrect.

This answer choice weakens the conclusion and therefore cannot logically complete the argument. The blockage and corrosion mentioned in this statement are major reasons why the new method will not be used.

D. the manufacturing of textiles relies heavily on a supply of raw materials that is high in quality and large in quantity

Incorrect.

This answer choice neither strengthens nor weakens the conclusion and, therefore, cannot logically complete the argument. The only mention of textile manufacturers is made in order to tell us that they are not interested in pigmented cotton. Since the new method deals with color and not quality or quantity, this answer choice holds no relevance.

E. using a white pigment will have no effect on the cotton's color, while its iron component will strengthen cells, resulting in a more resilient fiber

This answer choice strengthens the conclusion and therefore logically completes the argument. If using the method with a white pigment makes the cotton stronger (more resilient) without affecting its color, then it is more likely to be implemented.
