Sorry was looking at fixed only and it's 5 vs 7% for private vs federal. I'm just confused why every blog says always always take federal first.

The interest-rate on the federal loans adjusts starting July 1. Every year and the 7% rate you are seeing on the PLUS loans has not adjusted to the current rates yet. . I don’t think they have announced their interest rates for the upcoming year and those will likely also be around 5% is my guess for the plus loans. I would wait until June when new rates are announced to lock it in.
