Hi everyone! I just joined GMATClub and so thankful for all these great resources. In short, I am pretty frustrated and have been feeling a little defeated. Originally, my plan was to apply to all schools R1 but given my current score I've decided to push for R2 to give more time for prep. I really wanted to apply to Columbia Early Decision as it's my top school choice and I'm really thinking hard about if it's wise to apply ED in October...I'm wondering how much my score can improve from now to October. I still hope to apply in faith that I will see improvement. (My background is a bit unique/a-typical as I am an African female who is looking to go into marketing the Retail luxury fashion/beauty industry and coming from a career in legal marketing. I currently have a YouTube channel based on fashion & beauty to encourage and inspire young women and I own an online vintage clothing store which gives 10% of profits to under resourced communities in Africa.)

I started studying for the GMAT more consistently in April. My undergrad background is pretty void of math so I've really had to re-learn the most basic concepts from scratch. I did a GMAT prep course where I had to read through pages and pages of each concept and do the problems provided. I feared for a long time I was doing too much review and not enough practice problems/practice tests. I've started error logging to see what I'm doing wrong - a lot are silly mistakes and others are things where I'm just a bit stuck on how to tackle, and I do things the long way. Timing is also an issue. I've been using OG book to practice. I've been trying to study 2 hours during the weekday and longer on Saturday. I've really been trying to balance because along with my full time job my YouTube and clothing shop are my businesses that I also have to attend to. But with my score it just making me wonder if I'm tackling this totally wrong. I want to start doing problems on GMAT club based on each problem type and trying questions 600-700 level to get used to patterns. My test results make me feel like I'm not smart, which I know is not true at all but it can feel very defeating.

My score currently is around V35-37 Q25-35. My quant is pretty horrible, and my verbal is better due to my background in writing. They both could use drastic improvement. I'm just stuck on where to go from now. My first real practice test in April I got a 480...the one I blindly took before then with no background on the GMAT I scored an embarrassing 390. So..there has been slow and steady improvement. But not enough.

Have you seen people able to improve drastically in 4 weeks? Would I still be able to apply to Columbia ED? I am planning to retake at the tail end of September. I'm just kind of at my wits end and would love advice on some strategies/study plans that you think could be beneficial for someone in my predicament. Literally any advice that I could follow for the next few weeks would be great. I appreciate your help!!

Hi,

You have to first be clear in your basic concepts in both quants and verbal. For quant, you can refer to mgmat books for foundation or take TTP course. Then start solving questions from your weak areas and find a pattern and stick to it.

Thanks.

Hi natashakent,

I’m glad you reached out, and I’m happy to help. So, here is the good news: You’ve made some great improvement since you first started your prep, and moving forward, as long as you follow a linear and structured study plan as well as a realistic timeline, you can continue to make some significant improvement to your GMAT score. My only concern for you at the moment is that it may take longer than 4 weeks to make a significant improvement to your GMAT score. So, rather than taking the GMAT in 4 weeks, could you give yourself more time to study and take it at a later date?

If you’d like some specific advice on how to improve your GMAT quant and verbal skills, feel free to reach back out. In the meantime, you may find it helpful to read the following article:
