Find the 1st term of the Arithmetic Progression?
I. The sum of the 6th and 11th term of the progression is 38 and their difference is 10.

As per the solution provided:
Let ‘a’ be the 1st term and ‘d’ be the common difference
6th term = a + 5d
11th term = a + 10d
Thus,
5d = 10
d = 2
2a + 15d = 38
a = 4
Thus question can be answered using statement I alone.
It cannot be answered by using statement II alone
Hence [1]

My solution:
Let ‘a’ be the 1st term and ‘d’ be the common difference
Statement 1:
6th term = a + 5d
11th term = a + 10d
Thus,
a+5d+a+10d=38
2a+15d=38 ----(1)
It is told that their difference is 10
So there are 2 cases, increasing AP and decreasing AP
Thus,
if it is increasing AP --> a+10d-(a+5d)=10 ---(2)
Solving (1) and (2)---> d=2, a=32
if it is decreasing AP --> a+5d-(a+10d)=10 ---(3)
Solving (1) and (3)--> d=-2, a=4
Thus, 1 alone is not sufficient
From Statement 2
a+2d=2a --> a=2d
Thus, it is not sufficient alone
Combining St1 and St2, we get, a=4 and d=2
Thus answer should be (C)
