Hi GMATClub,
I have taken 4 official GMAT Mock exams so far from mba.com and one particular trend that I saw is confusing me. For context, here are the scores and time taken from each of them:
Exam 1: Overall Score 700 (V33 Q50)
Time taken for Verbal: 64+ minutes (less than 1 minute to spare)
Time taken for Quants: 57+ minutes (
4-5 minutes to spare)
Exam 2: Overall Score 690 (V34 Q49)
Time taken for Verbal: 64+ minutes (less than 1 minute to spare)
Time taken for Quants: 54+ minutes (
7-8 minutes to spare)
Exam 3: Overall Score 730 (V37 Q51)
Time taken for Verbal: 64+ minutes (less than 1 minute to spare)
Time taken for Quants: 55+ minutes (
6-7 minutes to spare)
Exam 4: Overall Score 750 (V40 Q50)
Time taken for Verbal: 61+ minutes (
2-3 minutes to spare)
Time taken for Quants: 51+ minutes (
9-10 minutes to spare)
As you can see, the sooner I am finishing a section, the higher I am scoring. So following this trend, I should be coming to the conclusion that the more time I have to spare when I finish the section, the higher my score is right? (Of course assuming I don't rush through the questions
JUST to have a lot of time to spare).
Also, The reason I finish a section soon is that the final few questions of a section that I get (especially Quants) is relatively very easy. In fact, as I finish the section with a lot of time to spare, I worry that my score would be low because of how easy the last few questions I solved were.
My confusion is this- If I am getting 49-51 in Quants, and that means GMAT is considering me in the 80th percentile in that section, why am I getting such easy questions towards the end? Since this is an adaptive test, if, say, I demonstrated the skill that proved my ability to be Q50 around question number 25-26, shouldn't I be getting even harder questions to see if I am good enough for Q51? Or if I demonstrated the skill to prove that I am at Q51, shouldn't it continue to give me difficult questions to test if I am truly Q51 or if I have been getting lucky so far?
