Hey thanks a ton for your response.

I don't intend to apply in R2 because I'm yet to take the GMAT. I will need to wait till Aug'26 for R1 applications. So I have 8 months but I don't know if I'll land a job before that. I have applied - hoping that I land something in investments/strategy as that will improve my story a bit.

Do you think a possible gap of months (Mar-Sep) before interviews can ruin my story?

Hi. Technically you will have a longer gap (not just to your application date but to matriculation and at that point you will have a 16-month gap potentially which AdCom will be looking at). Your work experience is counted to the matriculation time and while AdCom can't guarantee you will be unemployed all the way to matriculation, chances are most likely that's what it will be... so they have to assume worst case scenario.... they will also wonder about the termination reason if you are not able to find a job. It is not a great situation if you do not have a job by September. In my reply I assumed you were applying now in R2 but things make a bit more sense with the timeline.

While it is not great, there are ways to make this a strength. If someone gets laid off and is able to find a job in a tough market, that's a huge plus for the AdCom. It does not have to be right away a gap of 3 or 6 months is OK as long as you have a job. If it takes you a few months, you can always justify it as you were picky and wanted a specific role but you ABSOLUTELY need to secure a job and take care of your career/job situation. With MBA, whatever is best for your career is the best thing for your applications as well. So you will need to KILL it and work super hard to land a job... there is just no way around it.

If you think it is going to take a while to recruit into an appropriate position or you feel it is impossible, you can consider other options - joining Teach for America or Peace Corps and switch the story a bit but this approach is not always positive as this removes the technical gap, yet still creates a professional gap in your area of focus - IB. Another option would be to work on your own venture/startup in the IB space if job search is not doing great but I would really really encourage you to pour yourself fully into the networking, interview skill improvement, personal improvement (take some classes that WSO or some other folks offer), hire a coach for recruiting, and try to do anything in your power - this will be a rehearsal for your MBA path - as this is exactly what you will do after MBA.... as sad it sounds.

Thank you for such a detailed response. Well, not having a job during interviews is the absolute worst case scenario - I know I will find something good. But noted that it I need to figure this out much before my MBA interviews.
