Fellow members,
Every Gmatclubber would be waiting for the day that he could post his debrief.
I am not going to lie. I did too. Trust me guys, all those hard work put in before the exam will definitely bear fruit, and the happiness is totally worth it.
My score: 740. Q49 V42
This debrief is more of 'what not to do' and some strategies that I followed during the test. I feel there are enough number of excellent study schedules online and don't want to add more to the confusion.
To give a brief about me, Male - India - 28 - Married - 4+ years work Ex. - Engineering + PGDM
Course material used -
SC - Aristotle Prep
CR - Powerscore
RC - None. Just solved every official passage there is.
Math - GMATclub math book
Prep time: 3 months
Mock scores:
GMAT prep 1: 750
GMAT prep 2: 710
GMAT prep 1 (retake): 770
GMAT prep 1 (retake): 750
GMAT Exam Pack - Test 1: 750
GMAT Exam Pack - Test 2: 740
Gmatprep Exam pack - Definitely worth it!! Even though 1 question was repeated 2 times in each test. I highly recommend this.
First Exam scheduled - 05 Sep 2015. But, as I went to check out the center, found out that the only ID accepted in India is Passport, and I didnt have a valid one (expired one month prior to this). Rescheduled the exam immediately.
The Pearson guy at the centre told me that they get atleast 3-4 exam takers every day without valid passport.
LEARNING: Passport is the only accepted ID proof for all Indian ( I think all Asian) candidates.
The exam day:
Woke up at 7, went for a morning walk. Came back and read AWA. After that, slept again till it was time to get ready.
I reached the exam hall around 12:15 and the centre folks cross checked my ID and allowed me to write the test immediately.
IR - skipped multi source reasoning altogether. Didnt want to tire myself in the first stage.
AWA - Lord Chineseburned's AWA kit template was typed in first, even before going through the essay prompt.
Quant - To give you a brief history, I have never less than 49 in any of my mock tests. Therefore, I was really confident that I will not screw up quants. But, Boy was I wrong!!
3rd question was a simple work time related question, which I usually never take beyond 1.5 min. But, bad luck, during the exam, I was not getting the answer at all. My brain was frozen, and I could not think anything clearly. Not having food was most certainly a bad idea.
(LEARNING: have something before you enter the hall. I had a very light dinner and did not have anything till my exam at 1:00 PM the next day.)
Bunuels analysis of GMATprep was staring at me. 3rd question wrong... My quant score was sure to take a swan dive....should I spend more time or should I skip..
I skipped the question. My brain was not working at that point of time and I did not see any point waiting for a train which might never come.
The later questions went well and I was proud of a few ones that I could solve. I was seriously expecting a 50. But the initial question should have taken its toll.
Verbal - I found SC harder than GMAT prep (maybe because I was handling a partially functional brain), RCs and CRs were easier. Nothing dramatic with this section.
But, found out something, the time for getting your sheet ready for verbal (with the required ABCDE choices). We get around a minute before the verbal section (to read the tutorial), and this time can be used wisely.
After the section, had to input some demographic information, and finally the score popped up on screen:
740 Quant:49. Verbal:42
I was really happy and relieved. All those sleepless nights and lost weekends paid off.
I will update this with the study methodology adopted in a couple of days.
I dont know if I could contribute anything new here. But if I had to give one pointer, then, this is it - practice GMATPREP questions. This is the most valuable asset that most of us miss out. Utilize this to the max. Carefully evaluate each question and get the most learning from these.
I also made a strategy sheet which I will share shortly.
If you have any questions. Feel free to ping me.
