Hello everyone,
I just tried my very first complete GMAT test (princeton review online test) and scored a pretty low 570 (I was hoping for 600 and my final goal is 700 or more).
For instance, I only went through the whole princeton book, but not very intensively (I went through it in more than 6 months, spending, let's say, 4 to 6 hours per month). My goal is to attend the real GMAT in september 2015. I know the goal is far away, so I'm wondering if I'm using the right tactic ? Should I go on with working on it slowly, and then intensify my studies next summer ?
My verbal score is pretty low, but as I'm not a native english speaker, this part is sometimes very difficult to me, especially the reading comprehension (5/13). I thought I performed pretty well on sentence correction but I only had 11 out of 17. On the other hand I scored really well on critical reasoning (10/11). Do you have any advice about how to improve this V score ?
On the Q part, I had 15/19 on data sufficiency, but only 11/18 on problem solving. Still I'm confident to improve this with praticing. If I get to score the same in Q and V (ariund 40 in both), what would be my approximate score ?
I don't really know what to think of my score for now. It looks not so bad for a very first practice test, but still there is a lot of work ahead to get to 700 (is it doable ? It seems that yes, after reading several topics on this forum, but I didn't really find an equivalent to my situation on the forum).

Hi Damien,
If you're looking to give the GMAT in September 2015, then I would suggest that you don't start your preparations now. Preparation from GMAT works best if you take it from beginning till the end in one go. The preparation usually requires 3-4 months, and you should target the same. If you want to give it in Sept 2015, start preparing from May 2015. If you start preparing now, you will end up burning yourself out and won't feel like studying when the exam approaches next year. You can't afford to do this, because you'll start hating the GMAT. So its best to let it go for now.
In the meantime, you can do certain things to keep yourself on track. For verbal, you should start reading non-fiction books and news articles on a daily basis. Since you're a non-native, reading everyday will help you in developing a good language sense and grammar. For articles, you can get a subscription for the Economist and read from there.
For quants, just start doing basic maths in everyday life. Use approximations in daily calculations, do mental maths as much as possible, and take up stimulating games like Sudoku or something to keep your mind sharp.
Doing this till the next May will help you in your GMAT prep.

Yes, such a score increase is definitely doable. In addition, I agree with the other reply, if you are looking to take your GMAT in September 2015 I would not start a GMAT prep course yet. However, I would take this time to work on verbal basics. I would start by getting myself a basic grammar book and taking this time to fully grasp all of those concepts. When it comes time for you to start your studies (I would say sometime around the beginning of 2015) then you will have a much better basis for the verbal section. This way you will be able to devote equal time to both quant and verbal and won’t have to spend the majority of your time just working grasping verbal concepts.
As for if you get a V 40 and a Q 40, it is not really possible to say what grade this would provide as each question is weighted differently. Sometimes, one question may hold the same effect on your score as two questions. If you have any other questions please feel free to ask me.
